Movement was part of life before travel became a business.
Patience comes from a lineage of strong, God-centred women. Her mother was a traveller and role model. Between roughly ages five and seven, one of Patience's earliest long-distance memories was travelling by train from Johannesburg to East London for church. Childhood also included family moves through places such as Daveyton, Kagiso, Alexandra and Soweto, against the wider history of forced removals.
But movement also carried wonder. Family ties were strong. There were drives, picnics, movies, December trips into Johannesburg to look at decorations, and hours in the library where reading opened windows into other people, places and cultures.
At 18, the world became hers to enter independently.
Patience and her best friend travelled to Gaborone, Botswana, to be bridesmaids at a wedding. Married life included family travel around South Africa. In 1997 she experienced an MSC cruise to the Portuguese Islands. In 2007 a friend's overseas work took her to Rwanda. Later journeys included Zanzibar, Dubai, Thailand, China, Hong Kong, Bali, Austria, Hungary, Italy, France and Monaco.
Good service showed her what was possible. Bad service showed her what was missing.
Some journeys were curated so well that they remain reference points: Dubai and Thailand, a girls-only Bali trip in 2022, and a European land-and-cruise journey with friends and her husband. Other experiences were deeply disappointing. A major 2017 itinerary failed. In 2019, poor advice about timing and location damaged parts of a China and Bali trip.
Those experiences sharpened one belief: travel companies can forget the individual. Patience began doing more of her own research and bookings and found peace in being informed. See The World grew from the desire to give other people that confidence — without making them feel alone.
The legacy
Ten years from now, Patience imagines herself as a grandmother in the background, family members involved in the business, and generations of clients who have become part of the See The World family because the company helped create experiences they will remember for life.
